Industrial Applicability:
The invention must be useful with some application in industry (must make a technical contribution. Patents are granted upon submission of a successful application to an IP office by the inventor fora maximum period of twenty years. In some countries, such as Zambia, grant patent protection is currently for sixteen years. Ab Utility Model
is a statutory monopoly granted fora limited time in exchange for an inventor providing sufficient disclosure of his or her invention to permit a person of ordinary skill in the relevant art to perform the invention. The rights conferred by utility model laws are very similar to those granted by patent laws, but are more suited to "incremental inventions. They are particularly relevant to small-scale inventors. The scrutiny of an application fora
utility model may not be as stringent as that fora patent. The period of protection is lower than fora patent. In Uganda a utility model is protected for 10 years while in Austria the time period is 8 years and in Germany three years renewable up to a total period of 10 years.
