Key Points


Only staff trained and assessed as competent may undertake digital rectal examination
(DRE) and removal of faeces inpatients with established bowel management plans

The bowel management plan must be documented in the patient’s medical notes

The procedure may only be carried outwith the patient’s consent Learning & development will maintain a register of staff assessed as competent

Individual staff are responsible for maintaining their competency

Training for DRE and manual evacuation will be provided by specialist staff assessed as competent as trainers in this skill
